The Sleeve Procedure in South Florida Weight Loss Clinic

Choosing to undergo weight loss surgery is not an overnight decision. Most of our patients have spent years trying to lose weight or have been unsuccessful in sustaining weight loss.

Moreover, it’s not uncommon for our patients to struggle with obesity-related chronic illnesses and the high cost of medication. Obesity is a complex metabolic illness, and the complications of obesity go beyond physical problems. Many of our patients have experienced weight bias and stigmas at school, at the workplace, in their relationships, in their healthcare services, and in the media. Our Hollywood, Florida, Weight Loss Clinic near Miami specializes in medical solutions for weight loss. With over 20 years of combined experience, we work with patients from Hollywood, Miami, Palm Beach, and all over South Florida with the goal of helping them achieve meaningful weight loss.

The sleeve gastrectomy, also known as the vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), is the most common weight-loss surgical procedure in the United States. Approximately 80% of the stomach is removed laparoscopically, through 5 incisions, leaving the stomach the shape, and size, of a banana (a sleeve). This helps patients feel fuller faster, and, in turn, gives them better portion control. Moreover, the surgery affects the production of Ghrelin – the hunger hormone – so hunger and cravings often are reduced.

Because this obesity surgery is minimally invasive, the operating and recovery time is relatively short. The sleeve also decreases the chance of complications (like vitamin deficiencies), as the digestive system is not affected. The stomach is, simply, smaller. The intestines are not re-routed, and no adjustments are needed.

As with all medical weight loss procedures, long-term success depends on lifestyle and diet changes.

Are you a candidate for the sleeve procedure?

  • Do you have a history of weight-cycling?
  • Have your attempts to lose weight (or sustain weight loss) been unsuccessful?
  • Do you have a BMI of 40 or higher? (This is considered morbid obesity).
  • Do you have a BMI of 35.5 – 39 as well as a comorbidity like type II diabetes, high blood pressure, severe sleep apnea etc.?

Here’s what you can expect with the gastric sleeve procedure.

Before the procedure

  • Are you a candidate? Find out if this procedure is the right one for you.
  • Meet with your team of South Florida weight loss professionals – your weight loss surgeon, bariatric registered dietitian nutritionist, psychologist, anesthesiologist and care staff.
  • Prepare your body for surgery with exercise, diet, and supplement protocols. (Specifically, your two-week pre-op diet).
  • Stop tobacco use.
  • Plan ahead. Arrange for help at home. Pre-prepare post-op meals.

The day of the procedure

  • Be prepared to fill out some paperwork. Our staff will help resolve any questions you might have.
  • You’ll usually be scheduled for an early morning surgery. Do not eat after midnight the night before surgery
  • Surgery will last between one and two hours. This is a very straight-forward procedure with a low rate of complications.
  • You will wake up in a recovery room where you will be monitored closely.
  • You might need to spend one or two nights in the hospital, depending on your recovery. Your health is our priority.

After the procedure

  • Follow your exercise, diet, and supplement protocol, as was established with your bariatric registered dietitian nutritionist and South Florida weight loss doctor.
  • Schedule your first post-op appointment (usually a week to 10 days after the procedure), and a series of follow-up appointments to monitor your weight loss and wellness.
  • Keep all follow-up appointments.
  • The rapid weight loss you experience may cause you to have other symptoms in the first several months: body aches and tiredness (flu-like symptoms), moodiness, dry skin, hair thinning, and hair loss. This is normal.
  • Most candidates return to work within two weeks of their procedure.
  • Over the course of two years, you might lose 60% or more of your excess weight.
  • Reduce your risk of obesity-related chronic disease and improve your quality of life.
