Intragastric Balloon

Intragastric Balloon Weight Loss Procedure for Obesity

100% non-surgical weight loss procedure. Experience fewer side effects. Feel fuller faster. Curb cravings. Learn portion control. Reach a healthy weight. Reduce the risk of obesity-related illnesses and chronic conditions. Live your healthiest, best life.

South Florida Endoscopic Intragastric Balloon Placement

At our South Florida weight loss clinic, we offer this endoscopic, non-surgical weight loss procedure for qualifying patients. Approved by the FDA in 2015, this is the most minimally invasive medical weight loss procedure on the market.

During the procedure, a deflated gastric balloon is inserted with a catheter in your mouth, down your esophagus, and into your stomach. The balloon is then inflated with a sterile saline solution, to about the size of a grapefruit. You will be sedated for the procedure.

The gastric balloon doesn’t require hospitalization and takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes, from start to finish. Most patients go home after a few hours in the recovery room.

The balloon will remain in your stomach for six months, while you work on developing healthier eating behaviors, portion control, and a healthy diet plan, ideally with a bariatric registered dietitian nutritionist. Likewise, we recommend working on increasing movement and exercise in your life, and making sustainable lifestyle changes.

After six months, the balloon is removed, just as it was inserted, in an outpatient endoscopic procedure that takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Typically, patients lose 30% to 50% of their excess weight within those first six months.

Intragastric balloons are not often covered by insurance in the United States. Check with your health insurance provider and discuss the cost of the intragastric balloon placement with us to help determine if this is the right medical weight loss treatment for you.

As with all medical weight loss procedures, the efficacy of the procedure and long-term success depend on lifestyle and diet changes.

Are you a candidate for the gastric balloon treatment?

  • Do you have a history of weight-cycling?
  • Have your attempts to lose weight (or sustain weight loss) been unsuccessful?
  • Do you have a BMI between 30 and 40, as well as a comorbidity like type II diabetes, high blood pressure, severe sleep apnea etc.?
  • You have not had any other stomach or esophageal surgery.
  • Are you prepared to commit to healthy lifestyle changes, modify your diet, and increase your exercise?

Here’s what you can expect on your weight loss journey process.

Before the procedure

  • Are you a candidate? Find out if this procedure is the right one for you.
  • Meet with your team of weight loss professionals – your weight loss surgeon, bariatric registered dietitian nutritionist, psychologist, anesthesiologist and care staff.
  • Prepare your body for surgery with exercise, diet, and supplement protocols. (Specifically, your two-week pre-op diet).
  • Stop tobacco use.
  • Plan ahead. Arrange for help at home. Pre-prepare post-op meals.

The day of the procedure

  • Be prepared to fill out some paperwork. Our staff will help resolve any questions you might have.
  • Do not eat after midnight the night before your gastric balloon placement
  • The procedure will last between 20 and 30 minutes
  • You will wake up in a recovery room where you will be monitored closely.
  • This is an outpatient endoscopic procedure. You will be able to go home within two or three hours after your surgery.

After the procedure

  • Follow your exercise, diet and supplement protocol, as was established with your bariatric registered dietitian nutritionist and weight loss doctor.
  • The post-op diet will allow your body to adjust to the balloon and its new feeling of being sated. This is incredibly important for a quicker recovery. It will also get you accustomed to eating smaller portions.
  • Schedule your first post-op appointment (usually a week to 10 days after the procedure), and a series of follow-up appointments to monitor your weight loss and wellness.
  • Keep all follow-up appointments.
  • After six months, return to remove the gastric balloon. At this time, a second balloon may be put in place, depending on the treatment plan you developed with your weight loss doctor.
  • Over the course of 6 months, you might lose up to 50% of your excess weight.
  • Reduce your risk of obesity-related chronic disease and improve your quality of life.
We look forward to being part of your wellness journey.
