What is obesity?

Obesity is a complex metabolic illness and health condition that increases a person’s risk of developing chronic disease including stroke, heart disease, diabetes, certain types of cancer, and high blood pressure. There are many genetic, cultural, social, and behavioral factors that can lead to obesity.

Not only does being obese increase the risk of chronic disease, but it can also negatively affect people’s professional, educational, and personal lives. Those who struggle with their weight often experience bias, are stigmatized by peers, experience wage inequities, and even receive negative attitudes in healthcare services and more. The financial, social, and health effects of obesity are too costly to ignore.

How to determine if someone is obese.

Our team of board-certified, South Florida weight loss physicians and nurse practitioners use a variety of data to determine someone’s weight status. The measure most commonly used to determine if someone is obese, at this time, is the BMI (Body Mass Index). The BMI is the only index validated by the World Health Organization. Obesity is more complex than one number.

As weight-loss professionals, we know the importance of looking deeper. Along with a patient’s BMI, we analyze our patients’ weight, medical history, lifestyle, diet history, weight-cycling history, and more to determine if they are a candidate for medical weight management or bariatric surgery.

We look forward to working with you.

Live your healthiest life.

Obesity is a treatable disease. Bariatric surgery and medical weight loss treatments and procedures are the most effective ways to treat morbid obesity. Coupled with lifestyle changes, eating behavior changes, and diet plans developed by medical weight loss physicians and expert bariatric dietitian nutritionists, reaching and maintaining a healthy weight is possible.
